What happens when you can’t reach someone?

“Help the ones you can.” That’s a quote that I get from many people when I ask the question, “What happens when you can’t reach someone?”

It’s something that’s bugged me for a long while now. We all have people in our lives. People we care about and love. Is it just me or do we all have someone in our lives that we just can’t reach…that we just can’t help?

I’ve prayed my serenity prayer. I’ve prayed that God will put someone in their path that will help them to know God, I’ve tried to ‘reach them where they live”, I’ve prayed for them, and I’ve had others intercede for them in prayer. Nada. Zip. Nothing doing. Not reaching them.

I haven’t given up, but I’m wondering….is there a time when I should give up? If my intercession and pleading isn’t working or maybe even  making the situation worse, then maybe I should back off? But, should I back off for good?

There are many, many verses in the Bible about love. I can’t seem to find one to cover this particular situation. Maybe I’m not meant to at this time, or maybe I’m just not looking in the right spot.

For now, I’ll cling to this verse:

1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

Do you have someone that you just can’t reach – a child, a brother or sister, a friend, or a loved one? How do you deal with not being able to reach them? Do you know of a verse that covers this situation?

I’m soooo not a Christian-know-it-all, and I’m asking for help here….

  1. I have been in that situation before and it is rough.I pray for ’em but then when it seems things are getting worse or just don’t help I think maybe God is dealing with them in his own way.God wants us to pray for folks and once we have I feel he takes over and does the best thing for them and sometimes it’s trial by fire as with me.A lady I dated a couple of times Has a son and he was looking for a job and couldn’t find one.She also stated he was losing his faith.I prayed for him and just a day or 2 later he had found a job and I hope his faith is coming back as that was the most important thing. When you talk to them and it seems like it goes in one ear and out the other is very frustrating you just have to pray and let God deal with them.

  2. you said:I haven’t given up, but I’m wondering….is there a time when I should give up? If my intercession and pleading isn’t working or maybe even making the situation worse, then maybe I should back off? But, should I back off for good?

You need to have faith in the power of God. We are not GOD and we can do nothing without Him. Our prayer is sufficient enough. The people we can’t reach? We are, they’re just in the learning stages and we have to have patience in knowing that God is truly working.

That’s what faith is all about, my friend. Hang in there and keep praying and KNOW, HE hears you! 🙂 Everything works in His time, not ours.

    • Thanks Joni – I think that’s what I have the biggest problems with – HIS time, not mine. When it’s someone you love most in the word, it’s really hard to stand back and pray. You feel like you’re dong nothing, but you’re really doing something. I guess I’m having a hard time figuring out if it’s ME this person doesn’t want to hear from or God? Maybe I just don’t know how to reach this person….maybe I’m not meant to, but someone else? Gosh, I hope so….
